Age-dependent fecundity of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with sublethal doses of gammacyhalothrin BABT
Pereira,Alexandre Igor Azevedo; Ramalho,Francisco de Sousa; Bandeira,Catarina de Medeiros; Malaquias,José Bruno; Zanuncio,José Cola.
Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was exposed to gammacyhalothrin to study the stimulatory effect of low concentrations of this pyrethroid. The doses studied were 23.4375, 11.7188, 5.8594, 2.9297, 1.4648, 0.7324 mg.litre-1 and water, as control. The third, fourth, and fifth instars of P. nigrispinus were shorter with all the doses of this insecticide. The survival and longevity of this predator was highest with the lowest doses. The oviposition period of P. nigrispinus decreased as the doses increased. The lowest pre-and postoviposition periods were found with 11.7188 mg.litre-1 of gammacyhalothrin. The dose 0.7324 mg.litre-1 increased the clutch interval. The egg viability was similar between the treatments. The number of eggs per...

Development of a dry artificial diet for Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Fortes,Priscila; Magro,Sandra R.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Parra,José R.P..
Artificial diets prepared with wheat germ, soybean protein, dextrosol, potato starch, sucrose, cellulose, soybean or sunflower oil, and vitamin solution for rearing Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) were tested under controlled temperature (25 ± 1°C), RH (60 ± 10%), and photophase (14h). Three diets were tested and compared with the natural diet privet [soybean and peanut seeds and privet Ligustrum lucidum Ait. fruit (Oleaceae)]. All three artificial diets allowed full development. The diet containing sunflower oil was the most suitable for N. viridula while E. heros developed better on a diet composed of soybean oil. Data indicated that the artificial diets were inferior to the natural diet. The artificial diets were more adequate for...

Duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean seed by selected species of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Depieri,RA; Panizzi,AR.
Laboratory studies were conducted to compare duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean (Glycine max) seeds by the Southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), the red-banded stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood), and the green-belly stink bug, Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas). Results indicated that feeding time was significantly longer for N. viridula (≈ 133 min) compared to E. heros and D. melacanthus (≈ 70 min), but not different from P. guildinii (≈ 103 min). There was a positive correlation between feeding time and the resulting damage for E. heros, N. viridula and P. guildinii (R² &gt; 0.80, P < 0.0001), but not for D. melacanthus (R² = 0.1011, P = 0.1493)....

Effect of relative humidity on emergence and on dispersal and regrouping of first instar Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Hirose,Edson; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Cattelan,Alexandre J..
Laboratory studies with 1st instar of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) indicated that relative humidity (RH) greatly affected nymph emergence and survivorship up to the 2nd instar, reaching the maximum value (<FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 90%) with RH of > 80%. At 60% RH, 60% of the nymphs emerged and survived, while with 0% RH only <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 15% of eggs hatched, and most nymphs died. Emerged nymphs from egg masses placed in plastic boxes with a gradient of humidity remained on egg shells for ca. one day. After this period, they dispersed and regrouped on top of shells 6.8 ± 0.67 times, until they abandoned the shells toward the source of humidity, avoiding the water-saturated areas. Duration taken for...

Effects of environmental and architechtural diversity of Caryocar brasiliense (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) on Edessa ruformaginata (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and its biology Agronomy
Leite, Germano Leao Demolin; Lopes, Paulo Sérgio Nascimento; Zanuncio, José Cola; Martins, Cristina de Paula Santos; Moreira, Thiago Marçal Borges; Costa, Renildo Ismael Féliz da.
We studied the effect of environmental complexity and plant architecture on the abundance of the Edessa rufomarginata bugs in pastures and cerrado areas and its biology. We observed higher number of bugs on Caryocar brasiliense trees in the cerrado than pasture areas. Bugs were more abundant on leaves and branches rather than fruits. Caryocar brasiliense had greatest fruit production on pasture than in the cerrado areas. The abundance of bugs was correlated positively with aluminum, organic matter, and tree height, but negatively correlated by soil pH. Productivity of C. brasiliense were negatively correlated with aluminum, pH, and number of bugs, but positively correlated with phosphorus and calcium. The number of eggs per clutch was 14.3, their viability...

Impact of cultivation systems on Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) population and damage and its chemical control on wheat Neotropical Entomology
Chocorosqui,Viviane R.; Panizzi,Antônio R..
Results of field evaluations indicated that the neotropical pentatomid Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) is associated with wheat, Triticum aestivum L. In the no-tillage cultivation system, adults and nymphs were mostly found on the soil, near the plant stems and underneath crop residues of the preceding summer crop, usually soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, or corn, Zea mays L. Wheat grown under the conventional cultivation system showed minimal bug attack. D. melacanthus caused substantial damage to no-tillage wheat plants, particularly to seedlings. Bug attack reduces the number of seed heads of up to 34%. Seed yield was reduced in 31% due to the bugs' feeding, compared to plants free of damage. All developmental phases of the wheat plant were susceptible...

Insect drift and the case of Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) drift on the southern atlantic coast of Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Lazzari,Sonia M.N.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Grazia,Jocélia.
Insect drift on shore of lakes and seas is a relative common phenomenon although apparently not frequently reported in the literature. Here we review the worldwide occurrence of insect drift with emphasis on Heteroptera, and speculate on possible causes to explain such phenomenon. The dramatic drift of million of specimens of the pentatomid Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) on the shore of the southern coast of the Atlantic ocean in Brazil is reported for the first time. This drift, previously observed to occur in the mid 70’s on the coast of Paraná state with minor intensity (A.R. Panizzi, unpublished) was again observed on January 2006 along the Atlantic coast of Paraná (latitude 25º 45’ S), where an estimated population of 16 to 18 million of dead specimens of...

Nymph and Adult Performance of the Small Green Stink Bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) on Lanceleaf Crotalaria and Soybean BABT
Panizzi,Antônio Ricardo; Cardoso,Shirlei Regina; Chocorosqui,Viviane Ribeiro.
Lanceleaf crotalaria, Crotalaria lanceolata E. Mey (Leguminosae) was found hosting the small green stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood), in Paraná State, Brazil. In the laboratory, nymphs showed less mortality when fed on immature pods of crotalaria (64%) than when fed on immature pods of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill (88%). From 2nd stadium to adult, nymphs required less time to complete development on crotalaria (mean of females and males = 18.4 days) than on soybean (21.5 days). Fresh body weight at adult emergence was greater on crotalaria (mean of females and males = 51.4 mg) than on soybean (42.2 mg). Adult P. guildinii tended to live longer on crotalaria than on soybean. Mean adult longevity was 34.6 days on crotalaria, and 28.8 days on...

Ocorrência do parasitóide Hexacladia smithii Ashmead em adultos de Euschistus heros (F.) no Brasil Anais da SEB
Corrêa-Ferreira,Beatriz S.; Nunes,Maria C.; Uguccioni,Luzilene D..
Parasitism of Euschistus heros (F.) adults was studied in Londrina, PR. Twenty males and 20 females were collected each week from November 1996 to December 1997. In the laboratory, adults were sexed and maintained in plastic box (12 x 12 cm) with humidity and soybean pods as food, and observed daily during 30 days. The encyrtid Hexacladia smithii Ash. was observed attacking the bugs, being the first register of parasitism by Hexacladia in this host. The natural incidence of parasitism varied from 0.6% to 39.5%. Higher abundance of the parasitoid occurred during December and January and it was drastically reduced (<1%) from May to September. Males and females were equally attacked by the parasitoid (14.7% and 11.9%, respectively). H. smithii is a...

Performance of nymphs and adults of Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on soybean pods at different developmental stages BABT
Oliveira,Émerson D. M.; Panizzi,Antônio R..
A study was conducted in the laboratory to test the suitability of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods at different phenological stages of development (R3-R8) on the performance of nymphs and adults of the small green stink bug Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Nymphs and adults showed better performance when fed on soybean pods during the pod-filling stage (R5-R6), compared to those fed on soybean pods at the remaining stages of development. When fed on soybean pods without seeds (R3-R4) no nymphs survived and no adults reproduced.

Potential use of antibiotic to improve performance of laboratory-reared Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Hirose,Edson; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Cattelan,Alexandre J..
The antibiotic streptomycin added to the drinking water at a concentration of 125 mg/l during nymphal development of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)accelerated the development in ca. 2 days, increased survivorship, and doubled adult longevity; nymph survivorship and adult body weight were not affected when compared to control insects. Streptomycin has potential in rearing N. viridula, especially in improving quality of field-collected adults, by mitigating the introduction of pathogenic bacteria, and improving the quality of the population.

Trypanosomatid prevalence in Nezara viridula (L.), Euschistus heros (Fabricius) and Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) populations in Northern Paraná, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Sosa-Gómez,Daniel R.; Borges,Ednéia; Viera,Ivan H.T.L.; Costa,Fernando; Oliveira,Caroline N..
The stink bug complex in soybeans has a great potential to cause damage, their control has been difficult due to high population densities at the end of the season. Studies related to entomopathogenic organisms in stink bugs are interesting for their possibilities to be used as biological control agents and because they could be an etiological agent in mass rearing. We determined the prevalence of trypanosomatids in the most important species of the stink bug complex in soybean, from Brazil, Nezara viridula (L.), Euschistus heros (Fabricius) and Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood). Insects were collected in soybean and on alternate hosts during the intercrop season. Hemolymph drops from each adult were mounted on slides and observed under microscope; stink bug...
